Reporting to the Manager, Tailings & Environment, the incumbent develops, manages and is accountable for the environmental programs at Red Dog Operations. Including accountable to lead the Environmental support team in engaging with other operational departments to influence outcomes in the area of environmental performance based on the data analysis, observations, regulatory knowledge, and best professional judgment. Incumbent also provides supervision of Environmental exempt staff, advises and develops direct reports in their departmental responsibilities, and ensures they have the resources needed to effectively and safely perform the tasks required.
Responsible for the environmental monitoring program and ensuring full compliance to environmental operating permits.
Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on site, and 1 week off site
Responsibilities:- Represent Red Dog Operations to government agencies by negotiating and obtaining the necessary permits and variances which are in the best interest of the Company, and which maintain the Company’s environmental standards
- Manage and directs all Environmental Monitoring programs, including surface and ground water, air, dust, acid rock generation, soils, spills, biodiversity, waste management and other programs
- Scope out and manages studies required for supporting project initiatives and coordinates activities of environmental consultants
- Ensure the site’s reclamation and closure plans are fully developed for potential execution when needed, including up-keep of closure cost estimates for financial assurance and asset retirement obligations
- Ensure environmental database is maintained with appropriate QA/QC
- Ensure that underlying strategies and commitments defined in all pertinent permits are implemented and/or addressed and appropriately approved where circumstances dictate
- Prepare environmental reports and presentations for management and government agencies
- Provide environmental protection awareness, information and training to personnel and contractors
- Understand and advance Teck’s Biodiversity commitments including Nature Positive and reclamation needs
- Support and in some cases lead management of tailings, water, land, biodiversity, and closure risks, which includes identifying risks with operations and key stakeholders throughout the mine life cycle, developing corrective actions to mitigate risk and monitor implementation of corrective actions
- Ensure that budget funds are expended in accordance with the approved budget and with project approval procedures
- Ensure that permits and regulations governing the control of emissions, effluents, solid waste management and drinking water are managed and administered as required
- Interface with government officials in order to interpret policies and regulations, report non-compliance and mitigation measures, and to advise the Company of actions taken
- Work closely with staff of the NANA Regional Corporation on environmental and regional issues and is the point of contact on all matters involving the Subsistence Committee
- Keep Company management advised of changes to environmental policies and regulations so that appropriate actions can be coordinated for compliance
- Provide written and oral comments concerning pertinent legislative developments on Teck Alaska’s behalf. Support lobby efforts and interacts with elected officials
- Participate in the development of strategic plans and strategies for Red Dog Operations
- Participate as part of the Incident Command Team as the Environmental/Liaison Officer or Incident Commander and regularly evaluates the readiness of the Project Emergency Response group
- Participate in the Environmental Audit Team if requested by Teck Alaska
- Complete and communicate the annual water management plan in accordance with the current APDES permit
- Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations
