Land Surveyor

Responsibilities

• Plans and conducts survey and resurvey for complex issues for projects.
• Directs field survey crew activities, coordinates and integrates separate phases of each survey project and exercises knowledge and judgment in adapting and applying field survey methods.
• Checks work performed by the crew(s) to assure priorities, methods, and expected quality have been met.
• Uses various techniques for applying Land Surveyor principles, applying field survey methods, techniques and procedures in the day-to-day operations.
• Creates survey field returns and prepares draft field notes and plats describing in detail the surveys performed using word processing and Computer Automated Drafting (CAD) software.
• Prepares or provides information for preparing all necessary administrative documents such as time and attendance, vehicle maintenance and operational reports, accident reports, and weekly progress reports.
• Develops complete written reports describing unique problems encountered, with recommendations, for technical examination.

• Experience:
  
  One full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level. Examples: functioning as a member of a survey crew; establishing or monumenting survey corners and boundaries; utilizing surveying equipment and instruments such as GPS or total stations.
• Education:
  
  One year of graduate‑level education (18 semester hours) in land surveying; or civil engineering with a surveying option/emphasis that included at least 6 semester hours of surveying, 3 semester hours of land law, 21 additional semester hours in surveying, photogrammetry, geodetic surveying, route surveying, remote sensing, cartography, survey astronomy, land information systems, computer‑aided mapping, aerial photo interpretation, and survey analysis and adjustments.

  Equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.
• Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) as defined by OPM policies.

• Experience:
  
  One full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level. Examples: interpreting survey records; recovering and measuring physical survey evidence; completing survey computations; operating, adjusting, or maintaining survey equipment and instruments such as GPS or total stations; planning and conducting surveying projects.
• Education:
  
  2 years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to a master’s degree, or civil engineering with a surveying option/emphasis that included at least 6 semester hours of surveying, 3 semester hours of land law, 21 additional semester hours in relevant subjects. Transcripts required.
• Combination of
  
  Education and Experience:
  
  Equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.

• Experience:
  
  One full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level.
