Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex – Anchorage

Base salary:
Engineering Assistant 1: $33.76 hourly (OT Eligible);
Engineering Assistant 2: $38.91 hourly (OT Eligible);
Engineering Assistant 3: $44.49 hourly (OT Eligible).

As an Engineering Assistant in the Hydrology and Hydraulics group, you will be a designer working under a registered professional engineer. Your primary responsibility is to assist a team of staff in performing hydrologic and hydraulic engineering tasks to support design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and airports within Central Region DOT&PF.

You will analyze hydrologic data and perform hydraulic design of large‑diameter culverts, fish passage culverts, storm drain systems, and erosion control for transportation infrastructure. Activities include field inspections (often to remote locations via small aircraft), preparation of plans, specifications, and bid‑ready estimates, and authoring technical documents such as H&H reports, design studies, and site visit memos.

You may assist the project manager in coordinating consultant deliverables and reviewing engineering submittals by consultants and in‑house groups.

• Civil Engineering
  :
  Knowledge of concepts, principles, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
• Hydrology
  :
  Understanding of watershed management, climatology, geomorphology, groundwater hydrology, water quality, and water resource management.
• Hydraulic Engineering
  :
  Expertise in flow analysis of open channel and pressure flows, river stage estimation, and design of hydraulic structures.
• Interpersonal Skills
  :
  Ability to build effective relationships, communicate with diverse stakeholders, and demonstrate empathy and cultural sensitivity.
• Problem Solving
  :
  Identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations.

To qualify for Engineering Assistant 1:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (ABET accredited or not). An Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate, or proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam, is required.

Engineering Assistant 2 requires one year of entry‑level experience as an Engineering Assistant 1, or five years of progressively responsible sub‑professional engineering experience, or equivalent graduate study.

Engineering Assistant 3 requires a minimum of two years of engineering experience at the working or intermediate trainee level, or two years of experience as an Engineering Assistant 2, or graduate study. Full substitutions for experience are available.

• Engineer‑In‑Training (FE) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certification.
• Verification of passing the FE or FS examination.
• Valid driver's license.
• Willingness to travel to southern Central Alaska and to perform field inspections under adverse weather conditions.

The position is based at the Central Region Headquarters, 4111 Aviation Avenue, Anchorage. The office is a cubicle‑type layout organized by functional groups. Field inspections are mostly by car, with occasional small‑aircraft travel to remote project sites.
