Engineering Assistant (Levels 1/2/3 Flex) – Hydrology & Hydraulics Group, Anchorage, Alaska. Join the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT & PF) Central Region to support the design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and airports through hydrologic and hydraulic engineering tasks under the supervision of a registered professional engineer.
Position Overview- Rating:
Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex - Location:
Anchorage, Alaska (Central Region Headquarters, 4111 Aviation Avenue) - Salary: $33.76/hr (Assistant
1), $38.91/hr (Assistant
2), $44.49/hr (Assistant
3). OT eligible. - Growth:
Flex position with potential to be promoted to a higher level after successful completion of the probationary period. - Work Environment:
Office-based with field inspections by car, and occasional travel by small aircraft to remote project sites.
- Assist design and construction teams with hydrologic data analysis and hydraulic design of culverts, fish passage structures, storm drain systems, and erosion protection.
- Prepare plans, specifications, and bid-ready estimates for projects.
- Author technical reports, design study reports, and site visit memos.
- Support project managers by coordinating consultant deliverables and reviewing engineering submittals.
- Participate in public and agency meetings to facilitate capital improvement projects in the Central Region.
- Civil Engineering:
Knowledge of design, construction, operation, and maintenance of public works infrastructure. - Hydrology:
Understanding of watershed management, climatology, and water resource principles. - Hydraulic Engineering:
Ability to analyze fluid flow and design hydraulic structures. - Interpersonal
Skills:
Effective communication, relationship building, and cultural sensitivity. - Problem Solving:
Use of sound judgment to identify problems, evaluate alternatives, and provide recommendations.
- Assistant 1:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying; EIT or LSIT certification (or FE/FS exam). Experience requirement is entry‑level; you may be hired as 1/2/3 Flex. - Assistant 2:
Bachelor’s degree (ABET accredited or not) and one year of equivalent working‑level engineering experience as an Assistant 1; or four years of progressively responsible engineering experience with a state Engineering Technician/ Drafting Technician career. EIT/LSIT or FE/FS qualification is also required. - Assistant 3:
Bachelor’s degree (ABET accredited or not) and two years of working‑level experience as an Assistant 2; or equivalent education plus experience. Graduation from a graduate program may substitute for part of the experience.
