WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
As a Building Plans Examiner 2, you will supervise fire and life safety construction inspections and oversee the review of architectural and engineered plans across multiple disciplines. You will manage a team of eight, direct bureau work plans, monitor budgets, maintain inventories, and develop work procedures and databases. The role includes guiding the development of state building, electrical, fire, mechanical, and fuel gas codes and overseeing plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire and life safety standards.
You will establish occupancy and egress requirements, verify that construction projects follow approved plans, and provide technical expertise through training, presentations, and participation in conferences. Additionally, you will contribute to national code recommendations and support consistent safety practices statewide.
The mission of the Division of Fire and Life Safety is to prevent the loss of life and property caused by fire and explosions. By ensuring that all construction projects meet established fire and life safety standards, the division identifies hazards early and supports safe, code-compliant building practices across Alaska. Through thorough plan reviews, the establishment of occupancy and egress requirements, and expert guidance to designers, builders, and local officials, these efforts promote consistent code application, reduce community risk, and strengthen fire and life safety statewide.

This position is located at 3000 C Street, Suite 200, in a convenient mid-town Anchorage office with ample parking and easy access to nearby amenities. The daily work environment is professional and collaborative, with occasional travel to support statewide building plan review and coordination with deferred jurisdictions.
