Example of Duties

Supervises the activities of the Engineering and Planning Division. Serves as the Department's Project Manager for large design and construction projects (over $100 Million). These projects are highly controversial and sensitive environmentally and to the public, and require significant coordination with stakeholders, public advocacy groups, state and federal agencies, and other Municipal departments. This position entails professional engineering and management work requiring use of considerable independent judgment and initiative toward engineering projects concerned with planning, design, location, construction and maintenance of Municipal structures associated with solid waste management.

Position is responsible for environmental management and regulatory compliance at all of the Department's active and closed sites. This position exercises supervisory responsibility for four positions, an Engineer II, Engineering Intern, Engineering Technician I/II and an Engineering Technician III/IV. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, and eight (8) years of progressively responsible engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have been involved in managing the construction of large engineering capital projects. All Applicants Require:

  • Valid State of Alaska Professional Engineer License at time of hire.
  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • Valid State of Alaska Driver's License and satisfactory Driving Record at time of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history.

Military Service Interview Preference
