General Purpose Summary

Provides quality mortgage-backed loans to investors and the bank, approves and makes denial recommendations for loans to ensure compliance with bank, investor, agency, and regulatory underwriting guidelines by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes credit and property documentation included in conventional, FHA, VA, USDA loans to assess overall risk to the bank ensuring that sound lending policies are made; evaluates and identifies the impact of lending decisions on the Community Reinvestment Act and Federal Fair Lending policies and regulations. Provides quality mortgage-backed loans to investors and the bank, approves and makes denial recommendations for loans to ensure compliance with Bank, investor, agency, and regulatory underwriting guidelines.
  • Evaluates risk and communicates findings to Mortgage Lending or branch personnel responsible for loan file; resolves adverse investor and/or audit findings and clears discrepancies within authority ensuring loan files’ compliance with investor and insurers’ guidelines, federal regulations and bank policy.
  • Provides advice and assistance on real estate lending programs and guideline requirements to branches, management and Mortgage Lending or branch personnel to ensure loan approval underwriting conditions are met.
  • Performs reviews of appraisal reports, adhering to the real estate lending standards, policies, procedures and controls. Reviews title documents and all applicable compliance documents.
  • Maintains awareness of changing economic conditions, new trends and developments in the local and national real estate and insured-mortgage markets.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Stay up to date on relevant laws and regulations and complete all compliance training on time.
  • Knowledgeable of and comply with bank policies, procedures, laws, and regulations that apply to you and your job.
  • Maintain customer confidence and protect the bank’s operations by identifying and protecting confidential information.
Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum:
Four years mortgage industry experience including two years mortgage underwriting; or equivalent combination of education/training and experience. Familiarity with FHA/VA, AHFC, FNMA, and other investor lending programs.

Preferred:
Current knowledge of FHA/VA, AHFC, FNMA, and other investor lending programs. Experience working with automated underwriting systems.

Skills and Abilities

The ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, effective analytical and decision-making skills required. Word processing and spreadsheet software experience required. Ability to handle highly confidential information, frequent deadlines, and time constraints required.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, legal documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, auditors, and/or board of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. These duties are performed on an ongoing basis, as necessary.
