This recruitment is open to Alaska residents only. Applicants must meet the Alaska Residency Requirement.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The primary duties of this position are to identify, research, analyze, and update criminal history records that may impact an offender’s legal right to possess a firearm under federal law, and to enter the results of the completed research into the National Instant Background Check System (NICS) Indices for expedited evaluation of prospective firearms transfers/purchases. The incumbent will access a variety of confidential criminal justice databases as well as use publicly available sources as part of the research process.

This research ensures that a person is not unduly denied the right to purchase a firearm while ensuring persons with prohibitive criminal history records are denied the right to purchase a firearm.

OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE:

The Criminal Records & Identification Bureau is Alaska’s central repository for criminal records and serves as the primary point of contact for the Department of Public Safety with the Federal Bureau of Investigation NICS program regarding the screening of firearms purchases pursuant to the Brady Act. The work of this unit improves, updates, and makes available accurate information about misdemeanor domestic violence convictions that may qualify as firearms prohibitors under federal law.

This position supports the mission of the Division to provide technical and specialized services to the Department of Public Safety, other law enforcement agencies, and the public by ensuring state criminal history records are complete and accurate in the national database and NICS Indices.

BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM:

The incumbent will work with a highly dedicated team engaged in extensive research and analysis of criminal history records, ensuring expedited processing of research requests from the FBI, protecting the public, and reducing delays for authorized purchasers. This position offers an excellent opportunity to learn about criminal history records and criminal justice information systems, develop and expand research and analytical skills, and deepen knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and codes—all while managing a high volume of work within a collaborative environment.
