Minimum Qualifications

Must be 21 years of age or older. Alaska‑certified police officers and/or prior police experience preferred, but not required. The department will pay for the police academy for qualified applicants. For out‑of‑state police officers and/or previous law enforcement officers, the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) requires the completion of an equivalent law enforcement academy with a minimum of 650 academy hours, and a State of Alaska basic law enforcement certificate is required within one year of hire.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Alaska driver’s license (within 30 days of hire). Applicant must be physically fit and able to perform the daily job requirements of a police officer. Applicant must meet the minimum employment standards for a police officer as set by the APSC and successfully complete a physical agility test.

Applicant must possess and maintain sufficient physical and mental health as required by the Alaska Police Standards Council and as determined by a medical exam and physiological examinations. Applicant must also successfully complete a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination and a drug test. Individuals with a qualifying disability should request consideration for a possible reasonable accommodation that would allow them to perform the essential functions of this position as allowed under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

As a condition of employment, the final candidate must submit a UAA‑UPD F3 Nonsworn Applicant Personal History Statement, successfully pass a criminal background check, and obtain an FBI & Alaska Department of Public Safety CJIS Security Clearance. You must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National and provide this confirmation in your resume or cover letter.
