The Department of Public Safety (DPS) Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) division is seeking a Program Coordinator 1 to refine tribal liaison initiatives and strengthen relationships with Native Tribes. This position serves as a primary advisor to the VPSO Director, promoting consultation and collaboration with Alaska tribes, tribal organizations, and Native communities, while supporting government-to-government relationships and outreach. The role also involves planning, developing, and implementing program initiatives, as well as coordinating VPSO training, equipment, and supplies to enhance cultural competency and program effectiveness.

The mission of the VPSO division is to work in partnership with nonprofit regional corporations and Alaska Native organizations for training and employment of village public safety officers.

In communities associated with the VPSO program, citizens receive immediate response to emergencies without delays caused by weather or distance. VPSO work closely with Alaska State Troopers, and provide law enforcement, emergency medical response, search and rescue operations, fire prevention and suppression, disaster preparedness and response, public safety education, and community policing.

The VPSO division staff is a close-knit team made up of a director, statewide coordinator, training manager and administrative support. The division and the regional VPSO programs are a priority for Department's rural public safety mission, and you will have the opportunity to serve remote communities in ways that make positive impacts on the daily lives of Alaskans across the state.

This position works from the VPSO division central office located in the DPS Headquarters building on Tudor Road in Anchorage. The location has a stunning view of the Chugach mountains, is close to biking trails and has easy, accessible parking. The DPS headquarters building has over 150 employees which allows ample opportunity to develop professional relationships. The position requires an ability to thrive with a high degree of independence within a team environment which is supportive, professional, and friendly.
