Position: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT (SVU) DETECTIVE - Range 35-36 / APD

Job Information

Open to any current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department (APD), working as a Detective or an officer who has passed the 2026 Detective Test.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current contract between the Municipality of Anchorage and the APDEA.

Example of Duties

Anchorage Police Officers/Senior Police Officers perform a wide range of police services and a variety of tasks including; maintain order, enforce codes and ordinances, identification and apprehension of violators within the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA). Respond to complaints and requests for police assistance and intervene in various situations as required. Promote safety and wellbeing through the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws in a manner consistent with the mission and goals of the MOA.

Conduct preliminary investigations; collect and preserve evidence. Ability to coordinate with other agencies, maintain records and daily reports; prepare cases for court testimony and testify in court as required. Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Information:

Investigate criminal cases involving sexual assault, kidnapping, assault, and stalking. Interviews witnesses and victims, collects and preserves evidence, interrogates suspects, apprehends suspects, prepares and serves search warrants and operation plans, and testifies in court. Maintain accurate records and daily reports of activities, prepares court cases for prosecution, reviews and evaluates cases involving juveniles. Train other personnel in various areas of police work, assists patrol officers and peers with ongoing investigations, assists the general public with information and provides direction.

Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies in research of problem areas. Work collaboratively with other agencies including STAR, AST, SART, AWAIC, and AK CARES on case-related victim and evidentiary issues.

Extensively utilizes creative problem solving and effective investigative skills, general knowledge of Police procedures, criminal law, criminal investigations and internal investigations; and functional knowledge of the APD Regulations/Procedures manual and the prevailing labor contract. Discharge duties independently with discretion and confidentiality utilizing rational decision making and sound judgment. Bring complex projects to completion working under strict deadlines and multi-agency tasking. Communicate clearly both written and verbally to condense complex issues and events into accurate, complete and coherent summaries.

The SVU responds to Priority 1 cases 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Detectives assigned to the SVU may be contacted after regular duty hours, weekends, and holidays to be offered the opportunity or to be required to respond to such cases when the operational need arises. Other related duties as required or assigned.

Detectives are responsible for maintaining a professional working relationship including open dialogue and communication with the supervisor, their co-workers and employees of other partner agencies. Utilize a team-concept positive attitude with high standards of performance in support of the operational function of the Anchorage Police Department. Work effectively alone and/or in a team capacity.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
  • Must be a current sworn employee working within the Anchorage Police Department currently working as a Detective or an officer who has passed the 2026 Detective Test.
  • Must possess a minimum of three (3) years as a Police Officer with the Anchorage Police Department.
  • Must be able to perform all functions of a Police Officer.
  • Must be available for call-out at any time.
Additional Important Information

The APD Internal Selection Process will be utilized. The Internal Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:

  • Oral Board - minimum 60% passing score.
  • Discipline Review.
  • Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer. (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline.)

The eligibility list for the Special Victims Unit Detective assignment is good for one (1) year.

Applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position to be selected. An applicant that meets the minimum qualifications but is currently ineligible due to probation, prior assignment or length of service is still encouraged to apply to be put on the eligible list…
