Overview

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check the residency definition to determine if you qualify. This position is being recruited for in Anchorage. Pay will be determined based on the level of the selected individual. Microbiologist 1 (Range 14) salary: $26.66;
Microbiologist 2 (Range 16) salary: $30.62.

What you will be doing

The Environmental Health Lab (EHL) is recruiting for a Microbiologist 1 or 2 to perform analytical testing in the biology section to produce high quality, legally defensible data and maintain individual and organizational certifications and accreditations. This role operates in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities, requiring strong organizational and self-management skills. Activities may include preparations, quality checks, testing, peer review, SOP/document reviews and updates, training, decontamination, mouse husbandry, cleaning, media, data entry and review, internal and external audits, and more.

The Microbiologist will join a team of microbiologists and lab technicians to produce high quality, timely, and legally defensible data by performing regulatory testing on food, shellfish, finfish, waters, soils, and more to ensure the health and safety of consumers in Alaska and worldwide, support commercial industries, and overall environmental health.

Special Notice: This position requires performing a terminal bioassay on live mice and participation in weekend/holiday rotation for mouse care. It may involve exposure to pathogenic organisms, allergens, dead animals, live animals, and corrosive chemicals; use of PPE is required.

Microbiologist 1 (Range 14): Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college in microbiology, medical technology, a laboratory science, a biological science, chemistry, or a closely related field. Some positions require immunization against infectious diseases.

Microbiologist 2 (Range 16): Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college in microbiology, medical technology, a laboratory science, a biological science, chemistry, or a closely related field, and two years of professional experience performing microbiological tests as a Microbiologist 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere. Some positions require immunization against infectious diseases.
