WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The Department of Public Safety (DPS), Division of Statewide Services is looking to recruit for a Data Processing Manager
1. This position fills the role of DPS Networking Lead and will be responsible for the network and server infrastructure owned by the department and work closely with the State of Alaska Office of Information Technology (OIT) to manage shared enterprise infrastructure.

The Networking Lead will supervise a small team of network and system engineers to support department needs and works closely with the DPS Support and Application Teams. The Networking Lead plays an integral role in DPS by coordinating resources and collaboratively working with DPS and OIT IT teams, vendor partners, and stakeholders to execute projects for critical law enforcement enterprise applications.

The successful applicant will have thorough knowledge of information technology architecture, networking, security, and related technical subjects, be innovative, and be able to execute key responsibilities through independent initiative and skill. Experience can be demonstrated through a combination of education and work experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and prioritize tasking for the DPS networking team to meet support objectives and complete projects in alignment with DPS strategic plans.
  • Manage networking projects for DPS: planning, scheduling, executing, and developing support procedures.
  • Research technologies and provide recommendations for capital, operating, and grant funding requests; assisting with procurements related to network projects and operations.
  • Represent DPS IT in department projects and advise project teams on specific network and IT infrastructure solutions.
  • Review vendor proposals for IT systems to determine network requirements, estimate level of effort, and ensure compliance with CJIS Compliance and DPS/OIT standards for information systems.
  • Represent the department’s networking and relevant IT needs in SOA working groups and in collaborative enterprise projects with statewide impact.
  • Manage Tier 3 support for DPS network and system issues, ensuring that high priority issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner by the networking team.
  • Monitor technology trends and best practices, attend IT conferences, and meet with vendors to stay informed about new products and services. Research and make recommendations for the adoption of new technologies.
  • Ensure network systems are adequately monitored and assess current enterprise and line of business network infrastructure to identify deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement.
  • This position will work under the general supervision of the Data Processing Manager III but should require little supervision for day‑hours tasking and team management. All DPS Information Services employees are expected to provide occasional after‑hours support as required. Other duties may be assigned.

The Division of Statewide Services provides technical and specialized services to the other divisions of the Department of Public Safety, local, state and federal law enforcement, and the public  Division consists of the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau, Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory, Alaska Public Safety Communication Services, and Information Services.

Information Services develops and maintains all computerized resources for the Department of Public Safety's information systems and provides support for over 5,000 users statewide at over 70 locations. Supported networks and infrastructure range geographically across the entirety of the State and include the management of firewalls, routers, switches, servers, specialty equipment supporting law enforcement operations, and network interfaces to dozens of partner law enforcement agencies and federal authorities.
