The Outreach & Recruitment Specialist is a pilot, part-time role designed to expand Girl Scout membership through direct recruitment and short-term, staff-led troop facilitation. Under the guidance of the Membership Manager , in coordination with the Program Manager as needed, this position proactively engages families through school- and community-based recruitment efforts and launches new Girl Scout troops in established after school programs or community center settings using a paid-facilitator model.

This role blends outreach, sales, and program delivery. The facilitator serves as the face of Girl Scouts at recruitment events, converts interest into registered members, and provides consistent troop leadership while actively working to transition troops to volunteer leadership. The position is critical to reaching new families, increasing access in under-resourced or high-need communities, and testing innovative membership growth strategies.

This position is temporary through May 31, 2026, and will be evaluated as a pilot for effectiveness, sustainability, and alignment with council goals.

Key Responsibilities Recruitment & Outreach
  • Plan, schedule, and facilitate recruitment activities including lunch visits, troop formation nights, and community-based recruitment events.
  • Serve as a persuasive and engaging representative of Girl Scouts, clearly communicating the benefits of Girl Scouting to families and caregivers.
  • Actively recruit girls and adult volunteers, guiding families through the registration process and next steps.
  • Follow up with interested families to encourage registration and address questions or concerns.
  • Place girls into existing troops when appropriate and coordinate closely with the Membership team to ensure a smooth onboarding experience.
  • Track recruitment outcomes and share insights and recommendations with the Membership team.
Troop Facilitation
  • Start up and facilitate a minimum of two new Girl Scout troops in assigned after school programs or community center locations, as capacity allows.
  • Host one troop meeting per week for each assigned troop from February 1 through May 31.
  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) programming using approved Girl Scouts curriculum and materials.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for girls.
  • Recruit and mentor at least one additional adult volunteer per troop, including a troop treasurer, to support long-term sustainability.
  • Support troop participation in council-wide initiatives, including the Girl Scout Cookie Program, as applicable.
Volunteer & Family Engagement
  • Build relationships with caregivers and volunteers to promote understanding of the Girl Scout program and encourage long-term involvement.
  • Support volunteers through onboarding, training referrals, and mentorship in partnership with Membership staff.
  • Work intentionally toward transitioning paid-facilitated troops to volunteer-led troops when feasible.
Administration & Reporting
  • Complete required Girl Scouts onboarding, including adult membership registration, background check, gsL earn training, and volunteer overview.
  • Accurately track troop participation, attendance, and recruitment data.
  • Complete required end-of-program and pilot reporting.
  • Submit time logs and expense documentation in accordance with council procedures.
Collaboration & Professional Expectations
  • Collaborate with Membership, Program, and Site Coordinators to align recruitment and troop activities with council goals.
  • Represent Girl Scouts of Alaska professionally and positively in all community settings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support council mission and strategic priorities.
You Are
  • Committed to the mission and values of Girl Scouts and willing to maintain active Girl Scout membership.
  • Available for daytime school visits, afternoon after school programming (generally between 1:30–5:30 PM), and frequent evenings or weekends, depending on the needs of the organization.
You Need
  • Experience working with children or youth in group settings (required).
  • Sales, recruitment, education, youth development, or community engagement experience (preferred).
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout programming is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation.
You Will
  • Complete an annual background check.
  • Lift and carry up to 35 pounds regularly and engage in frequent walking, bending, and standing.
Additional Details
  • This is a temporary, part-time pilot position.
  • Weekly hours typically range from 20-25 hours per week, depending on assignments.
  • A stipend for troop facilitation may be provided in accordance with the Paid Facilitator Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Continued employment beyond the pilot period is contingent on program effectiveness and organizational need.
