Summary

The LPN works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. Primarily responsible for patient and clinic flow, efficiency of the clinic, customer service, and teamwork. This is an open continuous announcement. Applicants will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered. The close date for this announcement is May 18, 2026.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
  • Licensure:
    Must possess a full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as an LPN in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or District of Columbia.
  • Education:

    Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed.
  • Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or from the NLNAC (61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY 10006).

  • TRANSCRIPTS WITH CONFER DATE REQUIRED.
  • Exceptions include health care education in the military service or training in the military service accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment.
  • VHA employees converted to appointments under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405 will have this authority and future personnel actions under the same authority, and the waiver will not apply to persons appointed under those provisions after these conversions.
  • Individuals granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.

  • Grade Determinations:
    In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade.
Job Qualifications by Grade
  • GS‑03 – None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration).
  • GS‑04 – At least six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or graduate of an approved school and at least one year of experience managing practical nursing care in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical facility.
  • GS‑05 – At least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS‑4 level under general supervision of an RN or MD/DO. Expected to have a broad knowledge of practical nursing procedures and to provide a full range of nursing care to patients. Responsible for education, teamwork, and documentation.
  • GS‑06 – At least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS‑5 level. Technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties. Independently carries out patient care based on patient conditions and uses judgment in selecting procedures. Serves as preceptor for less experienced LPNs/LVNs.
Duties
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team in a coordinated care delivery model.
  • Maintain efficient patient and clinic flow, prioritizing patient needs and teamwork.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, the interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
  • Adjust work sequencing to meet team and patient needs and reinforce the plan of care and self‑help solutions.
  • Manage pre‑appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit or procedure.
  • Participate in problem‑solving on operational issues during team meetings.
  • Follow up independently on team huddles, ensuring continuity of care.
