Job Summary
The school nurse provides support to the instructional process by serving as a nurse with specific responsibility for identifying, evaluating, and providing health services for students. This role collects and reviews information on the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner. The school nurse develops and maintains a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions that are unique to individual student needs and administers medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by the student's physician and Anchorage School District policy.
This position collaborates with teachers, school staff, and administrators; and responds to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents/guardians regarding student health and wellness. The school nurse may provide clinical supervision to both licensed and unlicensed personnel.
This position serves schools in the central region:
Bayshore Elementary, Chinook Elementary, Dimond High, Gladys Wood Elementary, Kasuun Elementary, Kincaid Elementary, Klatt Elementary, Mears Middle, Northern Lights ABC, Polaris K-12, Sand Lake Elementary, Taku Elementary, and Tudor Elementary. The school nurse reports to and is evaluated by the anchor school's principal with nursing practice input by the director of Health Services.
This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of workdays is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
