Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse position is located at the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) - Primary Care section - in Anchorage, Alaska. This is an open‑continuous announcement establishing a standing register of eligible applicants that closes on 9/30/2026 or when all positions have been filled. Positions will be filled as they become available and multiple cut‑off dates will be used to consider applications for referral to the selecting official.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States citizenship.
  • Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the state or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission at the time of completion.
  • Acceptability of alternative education: military health‑care education or training accepted by the licensing body, or a license obtained from a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.
  • Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in the United States, a territory, a Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Qualifications
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
  • Qualifications vary by grade (GS‑03 through GS‑06).
  • GS‑03:
    No additional requirements beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS‑04:
    Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN/LVN, or graduation from an approved school with one year of experience in a nursing care setting, or graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
  • GS‑05:
    Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent. Must demonstrate the ability to provide comprehensive practical nursing care and to work with RN/MD/DO on training and patient education.
  • GS‑06:
    Completion of an additional one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent. Must be technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties, and capable of serving as a preceptor for less experienced staff.

Duties
  • Collaborate in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model, ensuring efficient clinic flow, customer service, and teamwork.
  • Check vitals, process reminders and alerts, administer medication, participate in team huddles, and manage patient schedules.
  • Adjust workflow and sequencing of work to meet team and patient needs and evaluate clinic readiness for patient visits.
  • Provide input on operational issues, monitor pre‑appointment requirements, and collaborate to assure continuity of care.
  • Participate in problem solving during team meetings and in follow‑up on huddles to share information with the medical team.
  • Serve as a preceptor for less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs on support duties for complex diagnostic and specialized procedures.
