Essential Job Functions
  • Shows appropriate delegation, while directing and supervising ancillary personnel in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating patient care in the pre‐operative/post‐operative clinical areas according to accepted standards.
  • Provides direct patient care in the assigned clinical areas and demonstrates clinical competence.
  • Participates in service recovery by taking ownership of the situation and correcting problems. Keeps customers informed of progress related to clinical operations and provides comfort, information and assistance during the process.
  • Reviews daily schedule and prepares patient care areas based upon types of procedures and specific patient care needs.
  • Communicates changes in status as necessary to physicians, family members, and other staff.
  • Initiates physical and psycho/social assessment and pre‑operative plan of care, identifies patient and obtains informed consent.
  • Completes and documents a pre‑operative interview, obtains necessary diagnostic test results and notifies appropriate physicians and staff regarding variances and/or concerns.
  • Completes the Post‑anesthesia record and assures all patients have met the discharge criteria before discharge; and provides all patients post‑operative instructions.
  • Assures the delivery of quality clinical care through participation in NSH benchmarking programs.
Requirements
  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing; current state RN License.
  • CPR required.
  • ACLS required.
  • Minimum one year in pre‑operative, intra‑operative and post‑operative surgical patient care.
Education / Experience
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse License. Pre‑op Ophthalmology experience preferred, but will train.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Demonstrates current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assesses physiological and psychosocial health status of patient.
  • Assesses pain per policy.
  • Completes patient history.
  • Verbally reports pertinent information to appropriate staff to provide continuity of care.
  • Legibly documents information in patient record and signs record using appropriate professional title.
  • Assesses level of understanding and expectations of care.
  • Identifies desired patient outcomes.
  • Establishes nursing diagnosis.
  • Establishes patient/family goals that are mutually acceptable.
  • Formulates Plan of Care for the patient.
  • Implements nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess and problem solve.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Practices within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, PRMC Policy and Procedures).
  • Performs nursing actions that demonstrate accountability (demonstrates flexibility, exercises safe judgment).
  • Continually adjusts care plan based on patient/family data.
  • Demonstrates proper pre‑operative process – communication/report.
  • Demonstrates proper procedure and documentation for surgical case counting.
  • Demonstrates proper aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrates efficient turnover time.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for obtaining blood products.
  • Demonstrates proper patient identification verification per policy.
  • Demonstrates proper surgical site identification and marking per policy.
  • Anticipates surgeon’s needs during surgical procedure.
  • Participates in a Professional Nursing Organization.
