This role is all about being the friendly, welcoming face of Whittier Parking & Campground, assisting visitors, managing parking and campground operations, and helping maintain a clean, organized site.
About the Job- Position: Parking & Campground Attendant
- Season: May – October
- Location: Whittier, Alaska
- Pay: $18/hour
- Hours: 30–40 hours per week
- Requirement: Valid driver’s license
- Directing fishing boat trailers and vehicles to designated parking areas
- Collecting parking and campground fees
- Checking permits and identifying expired or invalid tickets
- Providing basic information, directions, and assistance to visitors
- Managing customer interactions professionally, including occasional difficult situations
- Supporting smooth traffic flow and campground operations
- Maintaining cleanliness and general upkeep of parking and campground areas
- Assisting with or supporting self-service kiosks
- Working independently and using good judgment during daily operations
- Assisting with training new team members as needed
- Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Calm, respectful, and firm approach when handling noncompliant or upset customers
- Ability to collect payments, issue or verify permits, and follow procedures accurately
- Strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Dependability, punctuality, and professionalism
- Previous customer service or public‑facing experience preferred, but not required
- Experience handling cash, permits, or payment systems (Clover experience a plus)
- Experience working outdoors or in self‑directed roles is helpful
This position requires standing or sitting for extended periods of time and frequent walking throughout parking and campground areas. Employees must be able to use hands and arms to handle equipment, maintain balance on uneven ground, and occasionally kneel or climb stairs. Keeping workstations clean and orderly is part of daily responsibilities.
Most work is performed outdoors in Whittier’s coastal environment. Weather can change quickly from sunny and calm to cold, wet, and windy. Rain and damp conditions are common, and temperatures may fluctuate throughout the day. Employees must be comfortable working in unpredictable weather and arrive prepared with appropriate outdoor clothing and gear.
