JOB SUMMARY

With on-the-job training and assistance, supports the establishment and maintenance of orchards and food forests at RurAL CAP’s Supportive Housing facilities in Anchorage, as part of the Growing Rural Opportunities for Wellness (GROW) Program. Responsible for all general maintenance tasks related to the orchards/food forests, including grafting and planting trees and shrubs; servicing garden machinery; watering; maintenance of healthy soil; pruning;

weeding; and harvesting.

Assists GROW Program staff with planning, community engagement, and data collection. This is a seasonal, temporary, part-time position that will be re‑hired each growing season from May 1-October 30, through October 2028. Flexible work schedule, on average 10 hours per week. Weekly hours may vary depending on seasonal need.

To succeed in this role, you must be able to manage small machinery, comfortable with independent work, and able to provide your own transportation to four or more job sites located in east and downtown Anchorage. The ideal candidate need not be an expert in food forests though some knowledge of effective gardening techniques is preferred. The ideal candidate will be outgoing and friendly with Supportive Housing clients and staff.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish and maintain the orchards and/or food forests to ensure they meet specific requirements and expectations.
  • Perform basic maintenance such as watering, weed control and fertilization.
  • Plant and nurture fruit trees, shrubs, and various plants.
  • Build and maintain composting system(s).
  • Work with hand tools and basic light machinery. Service all garden equipment and machinery.
  • Maintain a clean garden by clearing rubbish and litter from the orchards/food forests and grounds.
  • Provide guidance to management on matters related to the orchards/food forests.
  • Work with other GROW staff to plan and lead opportunities for community engagement, including volunteers and Supportive Housing clients.
  • Ensure a safe environment for staff and clients by adhering to safety and health regulations.
