Summary

Under close supervision or general direction, depending on the job title, applies technical skills to competently provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services.

Responsibilities
  • Train in and perform a full range of simple‑to‑complex sample testing and laboratory services.
  • Train in and perform patient specimen testing. Ensure sample suitability. Evaluate, judge, and interpret test results and ensure accuracy.
  • Accept and process samples for on‑site testing or forward to contracted reference laboratories.
  • Identify and resolve inconsistencies in patient results.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments. Ensure quality control and functionality of instruments.
  • Prepare laboratory for inspection from regulatory institutions.
  • Provide customer service for questions directed at the laboratory. Answer questions from patient providers regarding test processes, patient results, or sample collection techniques.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Monitor, maintain, order, and stock laboratory supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Additional Roles for Medical Laboratory Scientists
  • Assess competencies of MLTs and MLSs and provide specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety.
