HDR's Alaska office is seeking motivated archaeological field technicians for archaeology survey and data recovery for the 2026 field season (May-October). This is a seasonal position based out of HDR's Anchorage, Alaska office. The successful applicant will be eligible for the ARCA Healthcare Program.
Responsibilities- Familiar with archaeological fieldwork and documentation.
- Available for fieldwork and travel throughout Alaska.
- Conduct pedestrian survey and data recovery efforts (shovel testing, excavation, documentation).
- Identify and analyze features and artifacts, complete field forms, photography, and mapping.
- Work under direct supervision of crew chief and Field Director.
- Spend majority of time outdoors conducting data recovery field efforts.
- Communicate effectively with team and maintain professional ethics.
- Show up to work each day on time and prepared.
- Follow safe work practices.
- Conduct archaeological survey and testing.
- Dig shovel test pits and excavation units.
- Hike over rugged terrain for 8-10 hours a day while carrying necessary field equipment.
- Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts.
- Complete field forms.
- Excavate and document archaeological units and features.
- Photograph resources.
- Log daily activities in field notebook.
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
- Significant physical work including lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring adherence to safety precautions.
- Exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and loud noises.
- Hiking and working in rugged terrain.
- Prior field experience in survey, testing, and data recovery.
- Previous Alaska‑based archaeological fieldwork experience.
- Experience with GIS processing and field tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or a closely related field.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Self‑starter with excellent writing and communication skills.
- Willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
- Familiarity with field study design, documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities.
