The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 3 (Laboratory Supervisor) located in Anchorage, Alaska!

This position serves as the Laboratory Supervisor for the ADF&G Gene Conservation Laboratory (GCL), overseeing and coordinating laboratory work for genetic projects statewide. The Laboratory Supervisor’s responsibilities include designing, tracking, and troubleshooting lab workflows; designing and implementing quality control measures; uploading data and querying the lab’s database; supervising several technicians and biologists conducting genetic lab work; and working with project leaders to meet project objectives and timelines.

This position may also conduct genetic lab work and associated quality control analyses, perform basic statistical analyses on genetic data, and create written summaries of lab methods and results for protocols, reports, and other publications.

This position helps fulfill the mission of ADF&G to protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources of the state, and manage their use and development in the best interest of the economy and well‑being of the people of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle,

by producing high quality, relevant genetic data that supports the management of biologically, commercially, and culturally important fish, invertebrate, wildlife, and aquatic plant species in Alaska. The GCL is respected and recognized nationally, internationally, and by the public as a premier laboratory in the application of genetic principles and tools for management of natural resources.

This is full‑time position based at the ADF&G office in Anchorage, Alaska, in the GCL, which is a high‑throughput, state‑of‑the‑art genetics lab. This is a dynamic position, with constantly changing priorities and competing deadlines. Work will be performed in the lab, at a computer, and through daily interactions with GCL staff and occasional interaction with other ADF&G staff and outside collaborators.

Occasional weekend work or non‑standard working hours may be required. Some travel is expected to conduct occasional field work necessary for sample collection.

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Knowledge and experience working in a professional laboratory with established protocols and quality control measures.

Experience with supervising multiple staff, including training, assigning tasks, reviewing work products, coaching performance, and writing evaluations.

Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities, as well as coordinate and manage multiple ongoing projects.

Experience managing laboratory supply inventories, ordering, and interacting with vendors.

Knowledge and experience using the Microsoft 365/Office Suite, Quartzy, R/RStudio, Linux/Unix, genetic analysis software, and a LIMS (lab information management system) database.
