Job Summary
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products.
Equally, you are an essential part of the bookstore team in maintaining the attractive presentation of the store and in ensuring its efficient running. You help unpack and shelve deliveries, tidy displays, and operate registers in a quick, friendly manner, delivering a highly professional service.

- Run registers competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries, shelving accurately and efficiently.
- Locate books and products with ease and accuracy using knowledge, colleague assistance, Book Master, and available tools.
- Support the café team willingly and effectively when needed.
- Understand loss‑prevention procedures, de‑escalation techniques, identify theft, and seek support for problematic behavior.
Work involves prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. You may work in other stores as needed to support the wider cluster.
Career DevelopmentAs you gain experience, your bookselling knowledge and skills will deepen. You will progressively contribute through:
- Building subject knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, and specialty categories.
- Using that knowledge to maintain sections, present books attractively, and make effective recommendations.
- Selling books in a positive, appreciated manner, supporting key sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, pre‑orders, and new releases.
- Developing expertise in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby & Collectibles, Music & Movies, and Newsstand, learning new areas throughout the store.
- Supporting back‑stock and key sales objectives, products, and new releases.
Upon mastering these skills you may advance to the Senior Bookseller role, taking on new challenges and growth opportunities.
