Purpose
To operate ARRC Gift Shop, selling and maintaining inventory control of retail items.
Responsibilities- Responsible for the daily operation of ARRC Gift Shop. Duties include opening and closing of store, setting up and putting away displays as needed; setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales; operating cash register, computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine.
- Responsible for gift shop’s cash bank. Duties include performing checkout and balancing the end of the day accounting paperwork involving cash, credit card, and internal sales; preparing daily deposits, preparing and receiving change orders, reconciling and preparing daily sales reports.
- Responsible for adequacy of gift shop inventory. Duties include replenishing supplies by completing daily inventory sheets and submitting to the Gift Shop Warehouse, retrieving new stock from the Warehouse, verifying all items are labeled with accurate price tags, and keeping track of out‑of‑stock items; updating shop inventory record to support spot inventory audits.
- Assist the Gift Shop Inventory Technician in processing all gift shop orders made online or via phone: pull and process sales, bag, address items and submit to the Warehouse for mailing.
- Enter data into database and prepare tally of data from onboard surveys relating to customer satisfaction, comments, etc.; contribute to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
Basic knowledge of accounting procedures, inventory control, ability to total prices of individual items purchased, collect cash or charge card payment, and make change. Skill in operation of cash register, credit card machine, 10-key by sight, and fax machine. Ability to reconcile daily sales reports, prepare deposits, and maintain balanced cash funds. Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory control system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e‑mail software.
Ability to communicate effectively and resolve problems with minimal supervision. Skill in setting up advertising displays or arranging merchandise to promote sales.
Incumbent performs under the general direction of the Gift Shop Inventory Technician and overall supervision of the Manager, Passenger Depot Services who provide procedural guidelines. Work is reviewed in terms of timeliness, accuracy, ability to prioritize and accomplish daily tasks while maintaining a high level of organization.
GuidelinesEstablished gift shop operational procedures are utilized; e.g., accountability of sales, inventory, safeguarding the change fund and cash received for purchases, and balancing the end of the day accounting paperwork (Cash, Credit Cards, Checks/Traveler’s Checks and AKRR internal orders).
ComplexityThis position ensures the gift shop is stocked and organized, items are well displayed, price tags are accurate, storeroom inventory is kept up-to-date and well organized at all times. Ensures security of gift shop stock at all times. Accountable for all monies and sales transaction reports. Resolves problems resulting from inventory accounting discrepancies and cash register or credit card machine malfunctions.

Accuracy in handling cash funds, merchandise pricing, and maintenance of inventory has a direct impact on income for ARRC.

Purpose of ContactTo sell ARRC Gift Shop retail items and answer inquiries regarding online sales and mail order procedures.
Physical DemandsIncumbent may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Work EnvironmentWork involves moderate risk of discomfort which requires safety precautions; e.g., moving displays from storeroom to shop, moving and unpacking boxes, organizing stock on shelves in storeroom and working around aboard moving trains. This is typically seasonal work from approximately April to September.
Required Qualifications- High School diploma or GED
- One year (1) of front line customer service
- Skill in operation of cash register, credit card equipment, 10-key by sight, and fax machine
- Basic computer skills using computerized cash register and inventory system, word processing, spreadsheet, and e‑mail software
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Retail sales store operations
