Position: Habitat Biologist 1 (PCN 114335)

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Habitat Biologist 1 located in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing:

As a Habitat Biologist 1, your primary responsibility will be to perform essential functions for the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game’s Alaska Freshwater Fish Inventory (AFFI) program. Under general supervision you will manage various aspects of AFFI project management, including procurement, planning field logistics, electrofishing, fish identification, camp support, field data collection, data entry & management, data analysis, project reports, and equipment maintenance.

The position acts as a crew leader, directing the activities of field crews collecting fish, stream and riparian habitat data.

The working environment you can expect:

Work is based in Anchorage but projects operate statewide. The position is funded for a minimum of 10 months each year (March–December) and may involve travel for at least 25 consecutive days each summer. Field work may include exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying in planes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals.

Housing options include bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents, often shared with other field crew members.

Who we are looking for:
  • Fishery Biology:
    Knowledge of aquatic life concepts, taxonomy, population dynamics, habitat requirements, life histories, reproduction, and conservation.
  • Ecology:
    Understanding of inter‑relationships among organisms and environment, competition, predation, evolution, natural selection, and impact of human actions.
  • Project Management:
    Ability to develop, schedule, coordinate, and manage projects and resources.
  • Scientific Research:
    Experience with research design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Planning and Evaluating:
    Organizes work, sets priorities, determines resource requirements, sets goals, coordinates with other organizations, monitors progress, and evaluates outcomes.
Education and qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.

If substitution is needed, the degree can be replaced by completed credit hours: at least 24 semester hours in biology or related fields (including 16 upper‑division courses) and at least 12 semester hours in chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Applicants who will obtain the required degree within six months may apply for a conditional offer with appointment pending degree completion.

  • Potential Fish Species Identification evaluation.
