Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, federal employees in transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), and other eligible applicants.
Duties and Responsibilities- Integrate forecast weather, water, and climate hazards with societal risks to produce and communicate life‑saving impact‑based warnings, advisories, outlooks, and general forecasts.
- Support development, production, and delivery of interpretive services, including tailored products, specialized notifications, remote briefings, and/or on‑site deployments to core partners in public safety and property protection.
- Collect, assess, analyze, and integrate a complete set of environmental data for forecasts at global, synoptic, and finer meso‑scale levels.
- Collaborate and co‑create with colleagues, leveraging talents to improve and optimize day‑to‑day operational functions of WFOs/NCEP.
- Use state‑of‑the‑art hydro‑meteorological data to monitor current conditions and assist in forecast preparation for weather, water, or climate hazards.
- Typical office setting with rotating shift work (24/7 operations); periods of acute mental alertness during rapidly changing weather conditions.
- Occasional travel and extended hours may be required.
- Low risk security clearance required; background investigation and successful completion required.
- One‑year probationary period may apply under Direct Hire Authority.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Positive education requirement:
Meteorology or related natural science major with specified coursework (24 semester hours in meteorology/atmospheric science, including dynamics, thermodynamics, analysis, three English scientific courses, two remote sensing). - One year specialized experience equivalent to GS‑05 (or GS‑07) in federal or non‑federal service, including use of hydro‑meteorological data to support forecast warnings.
- Combination of graduate education and experience may substitute for specialized experience.
- Applicable to all GS levels 5, 7, 9, and up to GS‑12.
