The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 2 located in Anchorage, Alaska!

This position serves as a stock biologist for the Division of Commercial Fisheries in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) Region. The incumbent oversees the daily operations of the Anchorage scale age laboratory for the AYK Region. The incumbent is responsible for implementing and maintaining quality assurance and control standards for collection, processing, archiving, analysis, and reporting of scale-based age, sex, and length (ASL) data from Pacific salmon species.

This includes coordinating with project leaders and regional staff to create standardized and ad-hoc queries of ASL data, fulfill data requests, write project reports, and assist with project proposal development. This position provides direct supervision of a Fish & Wildlife Technician 4.

The incumbent's work provides critical information to accurately characterize and assess salmon stocks of the AYK region. This information is important for the successful management and conservation of the fish stocks.

This position offers a flexible schedule and the opportunity to work as part of a small, collaborative team that provides essential data across a large and remote area of Alaska. In addition to gaining valuable experience working with fisheries management and research biologists statewide, you’ll contribute to one of the largest open-source age–sex–length (ASL) databases in the state. Our team supports the largest subsistence fisheries and some of the most remote commercial fisheries in Alaska, as well as a diverse range of stock assessment programs that directly inform research and management decisions.

This position is located at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Anchorage. The incumbent will have a private walled office and work in an environment that is friendly, professional, and collaborative. This position requires the ability to work with a high degree of independence but also within a team environment collaborating with a small group of 1-3 scale readers and interactions with state and federal biologists throughout the region.

The incumbent may be required to travel occasionally to meetings or to the field to train technicians collecting age-sex-length data. The incumbent may also have the opportunity to participate in other field work should the need and desire arise. We offer flexibility with work schedules and options for hybrid telework.
