Female Correctional Officer 1 – Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC)
The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for multiple Female Correctional Officer 1 positions at the Hiland Mountain Correctional Center (HMCC) located in Eagle River, Alaska.
Female applicants only.
Pay and leave: up to 16 days of paid leave in the first two years, increasing thereafter, and 12 paid holidays annually.
Work schedule:
84‑hour work week with a week‑on / week‑off schedule that alternates day and night shifts.
- Engage in the structured field training and Correctional Officer Academy, earning a Certificate and subsequent promotion to Correctional Officer 2.
- Implement safety procedures, maintain order and discipline, and respond to emergencies using self‑defense, firearms, and appropriate force.
- Operate security control rooms, conduct routine security checks and inspections, and assist in creating a conducive environment for rehabilitation.
- Read, interpret, and apply statutes, regulations, and procedures to specific situations, and explain them to the public, staff, and inmates.
- Assist in maintaining the facility’s mission of public safety, secure confinement, and offender management planning.
- Age 21 or older and a United States citizen or National.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certification.
- Valid driver’s license; a Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements may be required for some positions.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, use business software, and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge and application of self‑defense, firearms, and appropriate force; ability to resolve conflicts with sound judgment.
- Reading and comprehension of statutes, regulations, and procedures; ability to apply and explain them.
- One year of experience in custody, security, or rehabilitation duties within an adult correctional institution, or completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy.
- Willingness to work shift assignments; on‑call availability may be required.
- Background investigation and psychological evaluation required.

The Hiland Mountain Correctional Center is Alaska’s designated facility for female prisoners, offering a peaceful, private setting with stunning mountain views. The facility comprises 11 buildings, approximately 120,000 square feet, on 62.7 acres of land, and has a capacity for about 400 inmates.
