About the Role

Female Correctional Officer 1 (only female applicants). 84‑hour work week with a "week on/week off" schedule alternated between day and night shifts. Correctional Officers earn up to 16 days of paid leave in the first two years of employment, increasing thereafter, and 11 paid holidays annually.

New Correctional Officers undergo 12‑14 months of structured field training and attend a seven‑week Correctional Officer Academy. After completing training and receiving the APSC Correctional Officer Certificate, you will be promoted to Correctional Officer 2.

The Working Environment

Hiland Mountain Correctional Center is Alaska’s designated facility for female prisoners. Located in Eagle River, it offers a peaceful and private setting with stunning views of the Chugach Mountains. The facility includes 11 buildings and covers approximately 120,000 square feet, on 62.7 acres of land, with a capacity of around 400 prisoners.

Who We Are Looking For Core Competencies
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, use business software, and effectively communicate required information.
  • Ability to learn and apply self‑defense, firearms, appropriate force to protect oneself and others, and act quickly in emergencies, including diffusing conflicts by using sound judgment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend statutes, regulations, and procedures; apply them to specific situations; explain procedures and requirements to the public, others, and inmates.
Advanced Competencies
  • Assist with maintaining order and discipline, operating the security control room, employing techniques for handling unruly and violent prisoners, using minimum force, resolving situations, and performing routine security checks and inspections.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
Eligibility and Requirements

Successful completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy, or an equivalent accredited program, plus one year of experience in a correctional institution supporting custody, security, and rehabilitation duties. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, a United States citizen or national, and possess a high‑school or GED diploma. Valid U.S. driver’s license is required; a Commercial Driver’s License may be required for some positions.

Appointment to Correctional Officer 2 is conditional, pending successful completion of a background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and medical examination.

Background and Disqualification Requirements
  • Applicants may not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
  • Applicants may not have been convicted during the past ten (10) years by a civilian court of Alaska, the United States, another state or territory, or a military court of a crime of dishonesty or moral turpitude, serious physical injury, or multiple driving under the influence offenses.
  • Applicants may not have illegally manufactured, transported, or sold a controlled substance during the past ten years (if under 21 at the time).
  • Applicants may not have used a Schedule I, IIA, IIIA, IVA, or VA controlled substance during the past five years (if at least 21 at the time).
