Overview

Mechanic supports an Aircraft Ground Equipment (AGE)/Ground Support Equipment (GSE) shop. Ensures the timely and proper performance of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on AGE/GSE equipment and light support vehicles. Inspects, tests, and operates AGE/GSE to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation. Diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions. Interprets drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical data to facilitate repairs and/or modifications to AGE/GSE.

Identifies replacement parts in TOs and technical documents and orders those parts. Removes, disassembles, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstalls AGE/GSE accessories and components. Stencils and marks AGE/GSE as appropriate. Services equipment with fuel, oil, coolant, water, hydraulic fluid, and air as required. Operates, cleans, inspects, and services AGE/GSE tow vehicles. Maintains and documents AGE/GSE equipment and tow vehicle forms.

Positions equipment to support aircraft maintenance and flying operations. Schedules PMIs as required. Adheres to safety procedures and follows technical orders, as applicable. Reports to Supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Maintains Aviation Support Equipment (AvSE). Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on AGE/GSE, inspects, tests, and operates AGE/GSE to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation. Services equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air. Diagnoses mechanical and electronic malfunctions using visual and auditory senses, test equipment, and technical publications.
  • Disassembles and assembles malfunctioning AGE/GSE accessories and components; removes, disassembles, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstalls AGE/GSE components and accessories. Stencils and marks AGE/GSE per technical publications. Stores, handles, labels, uses, and disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
  • Prepares AGE/GSE for storage and mobility deployment; operates, cleans, inspects, and services AGE/GSE towing vehicles.
  • Maintains and updates paper and electronic equipment records; provides dispatch service for AGE/GSE, including positioning equipment to support aircraft maintenance and flying operations. Practices good housekeeping, tool control, Foreign Object Damage prevention, and safety at all times.
  • Performs all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of AGE/GSE maintenance experience.
  • Ability to inspect, repair, and operate ground support and auxiliary equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a government general-purpose vehicle.
  • Position may require domestic and international travel.
  • Ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands
  • Shop environment is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated; exposure to fumes and potential hazards from tools, moving vehicles, and equipment.
  • Regularly stand; use hands; communicate; and hear.
  • Frequently walk, reach, and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions; occasionally sit, climb, or balance; taste or smell.
  • Lift 15–25 pounds regularly; occasionally exceed 45 pounds.
  • Exposure to moving parts, extreme heat, vibration; occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, high places, fumes, weather, cold, and electrical hazards.
  • Typical noise level is loud with potential unsafe conditions; monitor for nonstandard operations and safety issues.

Compensation - This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position under the Service Contract Act (SCA).
