Non Journeyman Plumber

The Non Journeyman Plumber is responsible for performing preventive maintenance and minor plumbing-related repairs in Anchorage School District facilities. Duties include ordering materials and supplies, cleaning and unclogging plumbing systems, and completing minor heating system repairs. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

The following are required:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Minimum of three years of experience within the past five years in the field of plumbing. Work experience must evidence ability to perform tasks assigned.
  • The Anchorage School District requires that the selected applicant for this position be given a conditional offer of employment contingent upon successfully passing a post offer/pre-employment physical capacities assessment.
  • The following are preferred:

  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on commercial or institutional plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of commercial heating, hydronic, and domestic water systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing plumbing fixtures, valves, pumps, and piping systems.
  • Familiarity with boiler and heating system operations and minor repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or work order software.
  • Knowledge of applicable plumbing, mechanical, and safety codes.
  • Experience working in schools, healthcare facilities, government buildings, or other large commercial facilities.
  • A well operator certificate.
  • Any level of boiler operator certification.
  • Essential Job Functions

  • Performs preventive maintenance on plumbing fixtures.
  • Orders required material for assigned work.
  • Performs minor heat repairs and service.
  • Cleans pressure vessels.
  • Unplugs plumbing systems.
  • Thaws frozen water and sewer lines.
  • Routinely works at heights over 20 feet.
  • Performs skilled work in maintenance and repair of plumbing systems such as changing pump motors, valves, couplers, water lines, etc.
  • Performs tasks assigned from both oral and written instructions, including plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Works within established safety procedures.
  • Provides professional customer service and communicates clearly and professionally, working both independently and as part of a maintenance team.
  • Physical /Mental Demands

    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.

    The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
