Job Overview
Juvenile Justice Counselor (Levels 1 and
2) – Anchorage, Alaska – McLaughlin Youth Center, Boys Treatment Unit (Intensive Substance Abuse Program).
- Provide therapeutic and restorative justice programs to juvenile offenders, focusing on substance abuse treatment.
- Support youth development through life‑skills instruction, anger management, and drug‑alcohol education.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment in a 24‑hour facility.
- Prioritizing Safety – for youth, staff, families and communities.
- Responsiveness – timely responses to all stakeholders.
- Professional Relationships – respectful, inclusive, collaborative service delivery.
- Dedication – integrity and leadership in all actions.
- Respect – valuing individual differences.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Age 20 or older.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Six months of paid or volunteer experience teaching or coaching group activities for youth.
- OR six months of experience as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1 with the State of Alaska or equivalent.
- OR six months of experience in adult/juvenile corrections, law‑enforcement, parole, probation, residential treatment casework or social casework.
- Must be age 20 or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Background investigation, criminal record check and medical examination required.
- Conscientiousness – high effort and commitment.
- Integrity/Honesty – ethical conduct and trustworthiness.
- Interpersonal Skills – empathy, courtesy and cultural sensitivity.
- Stress Tolerance – effective handling of high‑stress situations.
Field work in a boy’s treatment unit inside a 24‑hour secure facility with shift work, holidays, weekends and occasional overtime.
