Job Description
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil & Gas is recruiting for an Analyst/Programmer 3-4 in Anchorage.
This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.
What You Will Be DoingThis position works with a team of Analyst-Programmers responsible for developing and maintaining custom software applications, managing databases, and integrating third‑party software critical to the successful management of Alaska’s oil, gas, and geothermal resources. This is a highly technical position that will work with technical and non‑technical DOG/DNR/SOA staff.
Mission and Values/CultureThe Department of Natural Resources’ mission is to ‘Develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska's natural resources consistent with the public interest.’ The Division of Oil & Gas’s role in that mission is to fairly and responsibly manage the state’s lands for oil, gas, and geothermal exploration for the greatest benefit of all Alaskans. This position is part of an IT team whose goal is to provide customer‑focused technology resources, applications, and solutions aligned with departmental and state strategic initiatives.

The workplace is conveniently located downtown near stores and restaurants. An office with an adjustable desk is available in the Atwood building, where all DOG staff are easily accessible. Free parking is located close by in both covered and uncovered locations.
This position is based in the Atwood building, which houses multiple state agencies at 550 W. 7th Ave. in downtown Anchorage. Work shifts are flexible within normal Division business hours. A typical workday will involve working both independently and alongside other development team members. Work tasks are self‑assigned via a ticketing system or assigned by a supervisor, with priorities being set by Division management.
PositionSpecific Competencies
- Software Development:
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing software in a given environment. - Analysis and Assessment:
Uses information technology in accessing, collecting, analyzing, maintaining, and disseminating data and information. - Database Management Systems:
Knowledge of the uses of database management systems and software to control the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data. - Software Testing and Evaluation:
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for analyzing and developing software test and evaluation procedures. - Technical Documentation:
Knowledge of procedures for developing technical and operational support documentation.
Two years of computer programming experience in a recognized computer language. One year of this experience must have been in a business application, scientific application, microcomputer or computer information management support specialty.
SubstitutionA bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science (CS) or Computer Information Systems (CIS), or a related degree with (18) semester or (24) quarter hours of CS or CIS may substitute for one year of the required experience. An associate’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems may substitute for nine months of the required experience.
