Overview
UIC Bowhead Transport, LLC seeks a safety-focused Ordinary Seaman (OS) to join our deck crew for operations based out of Alaska, supporting voyages across multiple sea regions including (but not limited to) the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, Beaufort Sea, and Gulf of Alaska. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated entry‑level mariner looking to build sea time, strengthen deck skills, and work in some of the most unique and challenging waters in the world.
Responsibilities- Supporting safe vessel operations under the direction of the Bosun and deck officers
- Standing watch and performing lookout duties as assigned
- Assisting with mooring, anchoring, and docking operations
- Performing routine maintenance such as chipping, sanding, priming, and painting
- Cleaning and maintaining decks, equipment, and work spaces
- Handling lines, rigging, and deck gear
- Assisting with cargo operations (where applicable)
- Supporting emergency drills and safety procedures
- Following all company, USCG, and maritime safety regulations
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential) with Ordinary Seaman endorsement (or entry‑level deck rating)
- Valid TWIC Card
- Current STCW Basic Training
- Ability to pass pre‑employment drug test, background check, and physical/fit‑for‑duty screening
- Prior deckhand or OS experience (commercial, tug, offshore, research, ferry, etc.)
- Cold‑weather or Alaska maritime experience
- VPDSD, RFPNW, or additional STCW endorsements
- Small boat, crane, or cargo‑handling experience
- Familiarity with marine maintenance tools and procedures
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Ability to perform prolonged standing, sitting, twisting, kneeling, squatting, and reaching
- Full range of motion of extremities and spine
- Good balance and coordination on uneven and slippery surfaces
- Ability to climb ladders, stairwells, and pushknees
- Ability to step 2 feet horizontally and vertically when transferring between vessels and docks
- Ability to carry 30 lbs for 30 feet
- Ability to perform medium‑heavy labor in extreme weather conditions while wearing required PPE
- Work in confined and cramped spaces
- Arctic marine environment including extreme cold, wind, icing, moisture, and wave action
- Exposure to fuels, solvents, cleaners, dust, fumes, and gases
- Constant engine, blower, and exhaust noise
- Irregular visibility conditions (fog, darkness)
- Vessel vibration
- Frequent hazards including hypothermia, slips, falls, lifting injuries, and pinch points
- Continuous hazard awareness required
- Rotational schedules available
- Travel between seas and ports is part of the role
- Long periods at sea expected depending on project needs
