Job Information
Open to any current Municipal employee within Maintenance & Operations.
This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302, and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Example of DutiesUnder the direct supervision of a street maintenance supervisor the Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) will perform numerous tasks while operating heavy equipment and perform tasks requiring manual labor. Operations will include winter snow and ice removal, spring thawing, street sweeping, asphalt and concrete repair, chip sealing, maintenance of drainage structures and other duties as assigned. The HEO must be proficient in the operation of numerous types of heavy equipment including but not limited to graders, loaders, backhoes, snow blowers, oil distributors, chip spreaders, rollers, asphalt pavers, steam boilers, and vactor trucks.
Training on the use of hand held GPS devices and laptop computers may be provided requiring the HEO to become proficient in the use of these instruments. Perform other duties as assigned.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent,
and
three (3) years experience in the operation of equipment, one (1) year of which must have been operating heavy equipment.
All applicants must possess and/or obtain:A valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tank (N) endorsement at time of hire.
Satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory drug screen prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
