Position: Preschool Teacher (Anderson Career Center)

POSITION SUMMARY

Develops and implements individual and group educational plans for preschool children, designed to promote social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth in a manner appropriate to their stage of development. Provides leadership through active direction and direct involvement with Teacher Assistants, Center Aides and Volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement individualized and group lesson plans and educational activities that promote all developmental areas to improve the readiness of children for school.
  • Guide and facilitate activities of the children including daily classroom activities and field trips. Use creativity to provide healthy and safe activities that are developmentally and age appropriate.
  • Select and set up equipment and materials in the classroom. Ensure there is a safe and healthy developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records, both on paper and in designated online systems. Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families.
  • Plan, conduct and document observations, assessments and screenings. Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child including weekly observations, examples of the child's work, and developmental assessments.
  • Compose and proofread correspondence and reports.
  • Conduct home visits and parent conferences to discuss the child's individual development and progress and assist parents in developing observational skills.
  • Work with the Teacher Assistant, Center Aides and Volunteers to develop their skills and abilities in planning and carrying out classroom activities.
  • Ensure the safety of children by implementing active supervision techniques to ensure no child is left alone or unsupervised at any time.
  • Use the playground as an extension of the classroom; assure that the playground is safe.
  • Eats with and assists children in eating to teach social and self-help skills and sound nutritional practices.
  • Ensure that the physical needs of children are met, assisting children in health and personal habits, such as eating, resting, brushing teeth, and toilet habits.
  • Create ways to engage parents in the education of their children including encouraging classroom involvement and home activities.
  • Perform duties of other staff members (Bus Monitor, Center Aide, Teacher Assistant) in time of staff shortage.
  • Ensure the mobilization and documentation of matching/in-kind funds.
  • Assist in preparing and serving meals.
  • Inventory all classroom equipment and supplies annually.
  • Work in cooperation with supervisor to develop and document progress on professional development plan. Actively engage in professional development activities to increase qualifications in accordance with Corporation’s Core Values.
  • Fill in on a temporary basis when a staff member needs to leave the classroom for a short duration.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Work may require flexibility to stay until all children have left the program.
  • Keep classroom clean and organized.
  • Support with translation or interpretation.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
ROLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate’s degree in child development or early childhood or related field along with two years of experience working with preschool children required. Base pay $21.39.
  • Bachelor’s degree in child development or early childhood education, or related field and one year of experience working with preschool children preferred. Base pay $24.56.
  • Require completion of CPR/First Aid within a month of hire.
  • Willingness to work towards any additional credentials needed to move to the next level in the position, this may include continued education.
  • State requirements may vary; individual must meet requirements for state in which they are employed.
  • Degree in a related field is defined as an associate, baccalaureate, or advanced degree in a field other than child development or early childhood education that either includes or is supplemented by twelve (12) college credits in child development, early childhood, or equivalent coursework focusing on children birth to age five. At least 3 of those credits must be in an infant toddler or preschool focused foundations course in child development.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Work is performed mostly inside the facility.
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • Sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, lifting (up to 30lbs), carrying, pushing and climbing.
  • Riding in a bus for prolonged periods of time with noise and vibration.
  • Moving through the Center and classrooms. Ability to respond to quickly changing situations in a safe manner.
  • Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Exposure to blood, other bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals and dirt.
  • Must have a willingness to work towards any additional credentials needed to move to the next level of the position, this may include continued education.
