Job Responsibilities
  • Function as a Charge Nurse for the assigned shift, and may assume the role of Nurse Manager III upon absence. Determine patient care needs and assign staff duties based on patient acuity and nursing staff training or competencies. Adjust staff assignment when necessary and notify staff. Maintain the therapeutic milieu according to HPH Policy and Procedures, Standards of Care, and age-specific criteria and interventions.
  • Make rounds on all patients, assess and evaluate condition of new patients and those at high risk or unstable, and provide direct care. Document findings and nursing actions according to policy using appropriate forms. Identify symptoms of physical and emotional illnesses through observation and record analysis; complete ongoing nursing care assessment and formulate a plan of care for each patient, which includes patient education and discharge planning.

    Ensure required patient assessments/reassessments are completed and documented as required (daily/weekly/monthly). Participate and provide supervision of the preparation and administration of patient medication; monitor this process continuously.
  • Report and ensure the completion of the Unusual Occurrences, Seclusions, and/or Restraints documentation. Keep the Nurse Manager or Nurse Supervisor informed of potential adverse and safety conditions involving patients and/or staff. Complete the 24‑Hour Nursing report and submit it to the Nursing Supervisor’s Office.
  • Support and actively participate in Nursing Performance Improvement activities. Notify the Nurse Manager of findings and corrective actions taken if needed.
  • Observe and evaluate staff performance of assigned duties and ensure that all assignments are completed. Provide feedback to the Nurse Manager regarding staff performance and complete the EPMS as assigned. Participate in disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Maintain clinical competency by attending and qualifying in all mandatory training classes (e.g., MANDT, CPR, SCEIS Modules, cross training, and age-specific criteria) and completing 20 hours of non‑mandatory training yearly.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing; or a three‑year diploma or an associate’s degree in nursing and one year of experience as a psychiatric nurse.
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the SC Board of Nursing.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; ability to see, hear at normal volumes, stand, walk, reach, pull, stoop, bend and climb at least two (2) flights of stairs. Ability to tolerate noise level and circulate in patient areas for long periods. Must be able to work with repetitive patient behaviors.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
Post‑Hire Requirements
  • Have the ability to perform MANDT and emergency care.
  • Be able to establish and maintain confidence and cooperation of patients and families.
