Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Grants and Workforce Development, the Apprenticeship Training Teacher’s role is to teach the curriculum approved by the state board of examiners to prepare students for the journeyman exam.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Teaches the board‑approved curriculum in the tier or level assigned to achieve the course level learning outcomes.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Adapts the program of study to meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Encourages adult students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior and work ethic.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives, and communicates these to adult students.
  • Ensures accuracy and best practices for compliance with organizational standards.
  • Keeps detailed attendance records and submits them as instructed.
  • Keeps current in discipline and teaching techniques.
  • Remains current in the field.
  • Supervises the classroom and students.
  • Any other relative teaching duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

A high school diploma and journeyman status in the trade to be taught is required. A college degree and prior teaching experience, preferably in a vocational high school setting or any combination of education and work experience, is preferred. Five years of recent full‑time employment experience directly related to vocational teaching is preferred.

Certificates and Licenses

Journeyman status in the trade to be taught.

Abilities, Knowledge and Skills Language

Skills:

  • Read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Write business correspondence and prepare lesson plans in accordance with district standards.
  • Present information and respond to questions from groups of students.
Mathematical

Skills:

  • Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Other

Skills and Abilities:

  • Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and peers.
  • Work effectively with all staff at all levels of the school district.
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
Work Environment
  • Frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Requires close vision; ability to read handwritten or typed material and adjust focus.
  • Interacts with the public and other staff and must meet multiple demands from several people.
  • Noise level moderate to loud.
