Position: Resident Assistant (RA)

A Better Chance of Andover is a scholarship program that supports academically talented young women from underrepresented communities by providing access to a high-quality education at Andover High School in Andover, Massachusetts.

After acceptance into our program, Scholars live in the program’s dormitory during the academic year, where they are supported by a residential team that includes a Resident Director, Assistant Resident Director, and Resident Assistants. The program emphasizes academic excellence, college preparation, personal growth, and community responsibility through structured study hours, tutoring, extracurricular involvement, community service, enrichment opportunities, and residential support. Graduates matriculate to four-year colleges and go on to become leaders in their communities and professions.

Role Description

We are seeking an Assistant Resident Director and Resident Assistant for the 2026–2027 school year (beginning in August, with the option to begin this spring). These are on-site, live-in roles located in Andover, MA.

Both positions live in the dorm alongside the Scholars and serve as mentors and trusted adult figures within the house, helping to create a structured, supportive, and inclusive living environment for the Scholars in our all-girls residential program.

Responsibilities
  • Supervising and supporting students during evening study hours and residential time
  • Helping maintain house structure, routines, expectations, and chores
  • Providing transportation to after-school, evening, and weekend activities, as well as doctor appointments when on duty
  • Accompanying students on house activities and outings when on duty
  • Serving as a consistent adult presence and positive role model within the dorm community

While both roles share core residential responsibilities, the Assistant Resident Director will take on additional coordination responsibilities, including organizing transportation schedules and coordinating volunteer drivers for Scholar activities and appointments.

Compensation & Schedule
  • Free room and board during the school year
  • Free summer housing
  • Private bedroom within the dormitory (RA & Assistant RD share bathroom)
  • Resident Assistant stipend: $100/week (excluding school vacations and summer)
  • Assistant Resident Director stipend: $125/week (excluding school vacations and summer)
  • Approx. 20 hours/week
  • Typical schedule:

    Monday-Friday evenings (6–10 PM) plus every third weekend
Qualifications
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to create a nurturing, inclusive, and structured living environment
  • Strong organizational skills and reliability
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving student and program needs
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends
  • Experience mentoring, tutoring, or working with high school students is a plus
  • Experience in a boarding or residential setting is a plus
  • Ideal for graduate students, teachers, or others with schedules aligned to the academic calendar
  • Car required

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, counseling, or a related field preferred.
