Position Overview
Materials Engineer – Process Development & Efficiency, Andover, MA. The role supports program process development, special process support, and production activities. The position requires evaluation of materials and processes used within product design and manufacturing, and supports material selections during design, development, and manufacturing of hardware. Responsibilities include evaluating a variety of materials, validating and verifying that materials and processes meet design and program requirements, and collaborating with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers.
The engineer will coordinate multiple simultaneous tasks within schedule requirements and travel up to approximately 25% of the time.
- Evaluation of materials and processes based on conformance to specifications and design and performance requirements.
- Support product production and supplier support activities.
- Provide evaluation and resolution to technical, operational, and supplier problems related to materials and processes.
- Participate in analysis and documentation of technical positions for alternate materials, obsolescence, and failure analysis.
- Support special processes in areas such as painting, plating, welding, brazing, heat treating, bonding/adhesives, polymers and plastics, non‑destructive testing, and additive manufacturing.
- University degree or equivalent experience with minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience, OR an advanced degree with minimum 3 years experience.
- Experience in material qualification, analysis, testing, design or development of materials.
- Experience with metal alloy systems or organic and inorganic coatings, corrosion control, or additive manufacturing.
- Experience with engineering drawings and evaluation of suppliers performing special manufacturing processes.
- Experience with mechanical and/or chemical analysis methods and characterization techniques.
- Experience related to Material Review Boards, Process Change Boards, and Engineering Review Boards.
- Experience with project milestones such as preliminary design reviews and critical design reviews.
- Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, planning, and time‑management skills.
- ABET accreditation preferred, though not required.
Salary range: 86,800 USD – 165,200 USD.
