Overview
Life Unlimited. Smith+Nephew designs and manufactures technology that advances living. The Arthroscopic Enabling Technologies division is developing the next generation of medical devices for minimally invasive surgery. We are seeking a Sr. Staff Electrical Engineer to contribute to the hardware development of medical devices, including digital image acquisition and processing, computer vision, and video streaming.
Responsibilities- Design, prototype, and develop digital electronics for Smith+Nephew medical products, including high-speed, multilayer board design; create and review schematics; lead component selection based on requirements.
- Lead interoperability between boards based on electrical system architecture; understand and provide input to system power requirements.
- Collaborate with FPGA and software designers to support FPGA and on-board processor connectivity and functionality.
- Conduct technical design reviews as needed; perform bring-up of prototype circuit boards; develop test protocols and fixtures; document testing results and failure analysis.
- Provide technical support to other groups to bring a product through commercialization; maintain existing products and support vendor technical questions.
- Coordinate and support electrical safety (IEC/UL 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-2, IEC 60601-2-18) and EMC (IEC
60601-1-2) certification testing; perform design controls to ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, and other regulatory bodies. - Participate in ownership of Design History Files and write specifications and test documents (protocols/reports) as needed.
- Leadership: lead/mentor junior engineers; investigate new technologies for future products.
- Minimum BSc in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
- 7+ years of experience in high-speed board design with strong SI/PI understanding; track record of taking at least two products from inception to launch.
- Proficient with at least one ECAD tool (Cadence OrCAD, Altium, etc.).
- Proficient in hands-on troubleshooting, problem solving, and data-driven decision making; proficient in using lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, multimeters).
- Experience working in cross-functional teams (electrical, software, systems, mechanical).
- Experience with design controls, preferably in the medical device industry.
- Experience with IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IEC 60601-2-18, and IEC 60601-2-2 is preferred.
- Experience with analog circuits and microcontroller hardware/software is preferred.
- Desirable: experience in a fast-growing environment with rapid scope changes; 1+ year of mentorship/leadership.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Less than 10% travel.
Compensation and BenefitsThe anticipated base compensation range is $145,250–$217,750 USD annually. The actual base pay depends on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
