Paint and Plating Engineer II

Position Overview

Paint and Plating Engineer II – Andover, MA – Onsite.

As a member of the Process Development and Efficiency section of the Materials and Process Engineering Department, the engineer will support all phases of product design and production for military and defense applications, focusing on corrosion, paint, plating, and metal finishing.

• Provide technical expertise in corrosion, paint, plating, and metal finishing for all phases of product design and production.
• Apply design-for-corrosion principles and assess manufacturability for new products.
• Select, optimize, and validate manufacturing processes, including supplier capability assessment.
• Conduct failure analysis, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions.
• Develop and validate painting procedures for different base materials and surface treatments.
• Establish inspection processes/criteria and train operators and inspectors.
• Collaborate with suppliers on manufacturing processes and support supplier quality assurance.
• Travel up to 50% of the time (domestic and international).

• Minimum of a University Degree (B.S.) or equivalent, with at least 2 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree.
• Experience in painting, coatings, plating, and surface finishing (procedure development/testing, operator/inspector training, fabrication problem solving, and inspection).
• Experience in metallurgy, galvanic corrosion, and protective coatings.
• Understanding of engineering drawings and defense specifications, translating into practical procedural instructions.
• Technical liaison experience between engineering, manufacturing and quality organizations.
• Hands‑on painting experience on commercial or military hardware.
• Knowledge of Military and Commercial Paint and Plating or Surface Finishing Specifications.
• Self‑motivated with strong communication skills and teamwork.
• Adaptable, able to work across all project phases from concept through manufacturing.
• Practical knowledge of metal processing operations and surface treatments.
• Problem‑solving skills with use of Design of Experiments, Six Sigma, and statistical techniques.
• Experience auditing coating processes and working with suppliers.
• Foreign language conversation skills a plus.

U.S. citizenship is required. The successful candidate must obtain and maintain a U.S. government‑issued security clearance (DoD Secret). The clearance must be active and existing after day one.
