BAS/BMS Controls Engineer
Join our dynamic team as a BAS/BMS Controls Engineer and be at the forefront of technical innovation! We're seeking a talented individual who can bridge the gap between complex engineering solutions and customer needs, while driving business growth through technical expertise. This position is responsible for providing high-quality engineering designs that align with project specifications, standards, budgets, and schedules while supporting the successful delivery of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) solutions.
The ideal candidate will bring hands-on building automation industry experience, strong project management skills, and the ability to independently oversee projects from design through construction.
Responsibilities include serving as the lead controls design engineer on medium to large BAS/BMS projects, completing tasks throughout the full design lifecycle, ensuring submittals are construction-ready. Develop, review, and coordinate controls designs, system architectures, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and engineering documentation. Manage controls submittals, material ordering, equipment selection, and project engineering deliverables. Review, price, and incorporate change orders into project design packages.
Coordinate engineering activities with Schneider Electric's Global Engineering Center and oversee remote design resources as required. Attend customer, consultant, contractor, and project coordination meetings independently, communicating action items and ensuring timely resolution. Identify anomalies or deficiencies in contract drawings and drive resolution through RFIs, customer communication, consultants, and trade coordination. Attend sales-to-operations turnover meetings and represent the engineering team with minimal supervision.
Provide financial summaries of project equipment and support project managers in evaluating project performance against budget. Identify opportunities to substitute specified field devices with Schneider Electric preferred solutions and prepare substitution requests for project approval. Apply ASHRAE standards and HVAC best practices when developing control system designs. Identify value engineering opportunities and recommend alternate technical solutions that improve cost, constructability, and system performance.
Coordinate activities within BIM models and collaborate with project BIM teams. Conduct site audits and field walkthroughs and convert findings into construction-ready submittals and design packages. Utilize engineering applications including Design 360, Prometheus, Microsoft Visio, AutoCAD, and other applicable design tools. Successfully manage multiple active projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Required Qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. Minimum of 3 years of experience within the Building Automation, Building Management Systems, Automatic Temperature Controls, HVAC Controls, or related controls industry. Experience supporting controls projects through design, submittals, material selection, construction support, and project execution. Working knowledge of HVAC systems, including air handlers, chillers, pumps, valves, sensors, actuators, and control devices.
Experience developing or reviewing controls drawings, wiring diagrams, control submittals, and engineering documentation. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project managers, customers, contractors, consultants, and engineering teams. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications include strong preference for candidates with experience at organizations whose primary business is building automation, HVAC controls, controls integration, or facility automation services, rather than candidates coming from unrelated engineering disciplines or industries. Familiarity with BAS, BMS, and ATC systems throughout the complete project lifecycle. Proficiency with Microsoft Visio, AutoCAD, or similar engineering design software. Experience supporting projects in healthcare, pharmaceutical, life sciences, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, mission-critical environments, or other complex facilities.
Familiarity with BIM coordination and construction project workflows. Working knowledge of ASHRAE standards and HVAC system design principles. Experience serving as a technical lead, mentoring junior engineers, or supporting engineering teams on large-scale projects.
Work Environment is primarily office-based engineering role with occasional site visits. Fast-paced project environment supporting multiple active projects. Opportunity to work on large, complex building automation projects across a variety of industries.…
