Working with limited supervision, performs all aspects of Sheet Metal related fabrication and repairs as well as general maintenance and housekeeping of workplace, tools, equipment and safety requirements. As required, works from engineering drawings and/or verbal direction to layout, fabricate, construct, and assemble a variety of complex sheet metal parts including, but not limited to, transitions, fittings, elbows, ducts, odd-shaped parts, covers, control boxes, exhaust vents, hoods, adapters and fixtures for maintenance, engineering, and production use.
Sets up and operates electrical and manual equipment to cut, bend, straighten and fabricate sheet metal including smoothing seams, deburring and assembly. Installs and repairs fabricated sheet metal parts and assemblies to support facilities and production equipment such as, but not limited to, heating and cooling ductwork, vents, exhaust, roof penetrations, stainless steel appliances, siding, and metal partitions.
- Lays out and installs sheet metal duct and fitting for equipment related to manufacturing processes and/or facility
- Works from sketches, prints, operating manuals and other written materials and/or verbal direction to determine how and where to fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal products.
- Selects the appropriate gauges and types of sheet metal or non-metallic material, according to product specifications.
- Lays out and fabricates sheet metal parts having complicated bends, complex angles, and tight tolerances.
- Performs bench work such as filing, grinding, sanding, and buffing in order to fit parts and obtain desired finish.
- Fastens joints and seams together with bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, sealant, metal drive clips, and bonds in order to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items ensuring the connections/bonds will last.
- Notifies supervision when major and extensive repairs or modifications are necessary.
- Creates stock list in conjunction with or reviewed with group leader.
- Performs applicable tasks to assist other maintenance employees on various types of equipment related to facility and manufacturing process needs when trade task overlap.
- Maintains a clean work area.
- Performs general maintenance and daily housekeeping of workplace, tools and equipment.
- Maintains records, moves equipment and materials and follows safety rules in performance of duties.
- Performs other similar duties as required or directed.
- High School Diploma, Equivalency (GED or HiSET), or two (2) years’ Trade School Experience
- Four (4) years apprenticeship in sheet metal trades or minimum five (5) years’ related experience
- Holds and maintains Massachusetts Sheet Metal License
