Job Overview

The Substitute PAWS (Play, Art, Wellness, STEM) Program Aide provides assistance and support to students participating in the PAWS program, which aims to provide academic support, mentorship, and enrichment activities to students. This position involves working under the direction of program coordinators and educators to facilitate program activities, provide individualized support to students, and promote a positive and inclusive learning environment.

The Substitute PAWS Program Aide may be required to fill in for regular aides on short notice or as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Program Support:
    Assist program coordinators and educators in planning, organizing, and implementing PAWS program activities, including academic tutoring, enrichment workshops, and recreational outings.
  • Student Assistance:
    Provide individualized support and mentorship to students, offering guidance, encouragement, and assistance with academic and personal challenges.
  • Supervision:
    Supervise students during program activities, ensuring their safety, well-being, and adherence to program rules and procedures.
  • Behavior Management:
    Help maintain a positive and respectful learning environment by enforcing program rules, managing behavior, and addressing conflicts or disciplinary issues as needed.
  • Academic Support:
    Assist students with homework assignments, study skills, and academic projects, providing guidance and resources to help them succeed academically.
  • Communication:
    Maintain open communication with program staff, school administrators, parents, and caregivers regarding student progress, concerns, and achievements.
  • Record Keeping:
    Keep accurate records of student attendance, participation, and academic progress, as well as any incidents or interventions during program activities.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent:
    Basic educational requirement.
  • Experience working with youth:
    Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, or youth development preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills:
    Ability to establish rapport with students, build trusting relationships, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Empathy and patience:
    Ability to empathize with students facing academic or personal challenges and to provide support and encouragement in a patient and compassionate manner.
  • Conflict resolution:
    Skills in managing behavior, resolving conflicts, and de‑escalating tense situations in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Flexibility:
    Willingness to adapt to changing program needs, schedules, and activities, and to work effectively in a dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environment.
  • Commitment to youth development:
    Dedication to promoting the academic, social, and emotional well‑being of students and fostering a positive and inclusive learning community.

Working Conditions
