Anticipated Summer Bus Attendant

July 6-August 14

30 hrs per week

M-F 6:30am-9:30am / 12:30pm-3:30pm

Overview

The School Bus Attendant plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well‑being of students during transportation. This position requires a combination of interpersonal skills, attentiveness, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus.

Responsibilities
  • Student Safety:
    The primary responsibility of the Summer Bus Attendant is to ensure the safety of all students on board. This includes assisting students as they board and exit the bus, ensuring they are securely seated while the bus is in motion, and enforcing safety rules and procedures.
  • Student Assistance:
    Provide assistance to students with special needs, mobility or behavioral challenges, ensuring they are comfortably seated and safely secured in accordance with their individual requirements.
  • Behavior Management:
    Maintain discipline and order among students during bus rides, intervening when necessary to address disruptive behavior or conflicts among students. Implement school or district policies regarding conduct on the bus, fostering a positive and respectful atmosphere.
  • Deescalation Training:
    Participate in staff training in deescalation strategies for students with behavioral needs and implement to support student needs and promote safety.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    Be prepared to respond quickly and effectively in case of emergencies such as accidents, medical incidents, or inclement weather. Follow established protocols for evacuating the bus and providing assistance to students as needed.
  • Communication:
    Maintain open and effective communication with the bus driver and school staff, regarding any issues or concerns related to student behavior, safety, or well‑being. Report any incidents or noteworthy observations promptly and accurately.
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    Assist the bus driver in conducting pre‑trip inspections of the bus to ensure that all safety equipment, such as seat belts and emergency exits, is in proper working condition. Report any maintenance issues or safety concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Documentation:
    Keep accurate records of daily bus routes, passenger counts, and any incidents or accidents that occur during transportation. Complete required paperwork and documentation in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Training and Professional Development:
    Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities provided by the school district or transportation department to enhance skills and knowledge related to student transportation, safety protocols, and behavior management techniques.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working with children in a school or childcare setting preferred.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations.
  • Physical stamina and ability to assist students with boarding and exiting the bus, including those with special needs.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and emergency protocols.
  • Willingness to undergo background checks as required by state regulations or school district policies.

Salary:
Starting at $16.55 per hour, based on experience - Per the current Andover Educational Support Personnel Association Collective Bargaining Agreement
