Description

Under general supervision, services, maintains and repairs plumbing systems within County buildings and facilities; provides work direction to less experienced staff.

Hours: Mon - Fri, 8-5, additional hours as job requires

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides work direction to other staff; assigns and reviews work; evaluates work performance;
  • Prioritizes work orders; prepares materials lists for projects;
  • Responds in a timely manner to work requests requiring plumbing expertise;
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing systems by opening clogged sewer lines and drains, replacing flappers, repairing leaks, and mending burst pipes;
  • Installs and repairs fixtures such as sinks, commodes, water heaters, hot water tanks, and water fountains when necessary;
  • Delivers office supplies; moves records and furniture;
  • Provides other maintenance as necessary;
  • Completes annual continuing education requirements to maintain state required license;
  • During the first 72 hours following a disaster, remains ready and available for on-site response.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:

Associate's degree or a certificate from a vocational school in plumbing course work; AND five years of experience in carpentry work, including one year of supervisory or lead work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Knowledge of:
  • Local and State regulations regarding plumbing codes, building codes and ADA codes;
  • Basic methods, techniques, principles and practices used in the building trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and general construction;
  • Design, construction and maintenance of public facilities;
  • Materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance projects;
  • Commercial construction and remodeling methods and practices;
  • Safety rules and regulations;
  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment;
  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision.
Skill in:
  • Supervising the work of others;
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies, suppliers, vendors and contractors;
  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions;
  • Interpreting technical instructions in various forms and dealing with abstract and concrete variables;
  • Performing mathematical calculations with skill and accuracy, and maintaining electronic records and files;
  • Operating various motorized vehicles and equipment;
  • Operating various hand and power tools, block pane, trenching machine, combination square, hammer, jack, hoe, shovel, router, chain saw, electric drills, sanders, joiner, planer, bits, miter saw, tape measure, coping saw, level, circular saw, pry bar, chisels, hand saw, hole saw, sheep's foot, saber saw brace, knife, ruler, etc;
  • Meeting critical time deadlines;
  • Reading and understanding blueprints and technical manuals;
  • Building effective work teams and providing effective customer service;
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Texas Driver's License

Texas State Master's Electrical License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. May be required to climb ladders and perform work at high locations. May be exposed to excessive noise levels, dangerous machinery, high, precarious places, risk of electrical shock, vibration, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
