Job Description

At Ankeny Schools, the Special Education Teacher plays a vital role in ensuring all students have access to meaningful learning experiences and the support they need to succeed. Design and deliver individualized and small‑group instruction aligned with district curriculum, support students’ academic, social, and functional skill development, and create inclusive learning environments.

Position Summary

The role offers collaboration with general education teachers, professional staff, and administrators to meet diverse student needs, and partnership with families to support student growth and progress.

Qualifications

Experience
:
Prior teaching experience preferred, but not required.

Education & Licensure
:
Bachelor’s degree in position related area and Iowa BOEE Teacher License.

Endorsement Requirement
: STRAT I.

Essential Functions Instructional Support

Accommodates and/or modifies course content with general education teachers to provide specially designed instruction aligned with individualized learning plans.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

Administers developmental testing and subject‑specific assessments; evaluates student progress toward objectives and prepares documentation such as adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPS, and behavior logs.

Behavior and Student Support

Manages student behavior, counsels students, and monitors them in various educational settings to ensure a safe and positive environment.

Communication and Collaboration

Advises parents and legal guardians, collaborates with instructional staff and community resources, responds to inquiries, and participates in meetings such as LEPs and 504.

Student Health and Safety

Provides first aid and assistance to medically fragile children when the nurse is unavailable; reports incidents to maintain safety and comply with laws and policies.

Attendance & Reliability

Demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality, ensuring instructional continuity and student stability.

Adherence to Iowa Teaching & Ethical Standards

Upholds Iowa Teaching Standards and Ethical Standards, maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement.

Other Functions
  • Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all employees.
  • Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Use positive and professional communication.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and district policies.
  • Support district goals and objectives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Working Environment

Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing, and walking; work may involve extreme temperatures, humidity, exposure to communicable diseases, and emotional stress.

Terms of Employment

Work year established by the district; salary according to schedule adopted annually.

Clearances

Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

Evaluation

Job performance will be evaluated annually, as per district policies and procedures.
