Position Summary

At Ankeny Schools, the Special Education Teacher plays a vital role in ensuring all students have access to meaningful learning experiences and the support they need to succeed. The teacher designs and delivers individualized and small‑group instruction aligned with the district curriculum, supports students’ academic, social, and functional skill development, and creates inclusive learning environments where students feel supported and valued.

The role offers opportunity for collaboration with general education teachers, professional staff, and administrators to meet diverse student needs and partner with families to support growth and progress.

Qualifications

Experience
:
Prior teaching experience preferred, but not required.
Education & Licensure
:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and Iowa BOEE Teacher License.
Endorsement Requirement
:
Instructional Strategist II (BD/LD) or Instructional Strategist II ().

Essential Functions
  • Accommodate and modify course content in collaboration with general education teachers to provide students with specially designed instruction that addresses individualized learning plans.
  • Deliver specialized instruction to improve student success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Support classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
  • Administer developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to evaluate student competency and develop individual learning plans.
  • Assess student progress, provide feedback, and prepare written materials such as notes, attendance records, and behavioral logs.
  • Manage student behavior, counsel students, and monitor them in various educational settings.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians about progress, expectations, and strategies for improvement.
  • Collaborate with instructional staff, community resources, and school personnel to improve student outcomes.
  • Respond to inquiries, resolve issues, and participate in meetings such as IEPs and 504 meetings.
  • Administer first aid and report incidents to maintain safety and compliance with policies.
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance, punctuality, and instructional continuity.
  • Adhere to Iowa Teaching Standards and Ethical Standards for Educators.
Other Functions
  • Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all employees.
  • Work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate respect and professionalism in interactions with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Use positive and professional communication in all interactions.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and district policies.
  • Support district goals and objectives and contribute to the overall success of the school community.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Working Environment

Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing, and walking. Conditions may involve extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to communicable diseases. The position requires emotional control under stress.

Terms of Employment

Work year established by the District; salary according to the adopted schedule.

Clearances

Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

Evaluation

Job performance evaluated annually per district policies.
